Tips required please - Tracing Scottish Ancestors?

I have traced my Family Tree back to 1854 when James Carruthers married Janet Deans. I knew they were Scottish from the 1871 and 1881 Census that I have found them on. I sent for the marriage details from Scotlands People and received an extract from an Old Parichial Register, which other than the two people themsleves only mentions a John Brown as representing Janet Deans. Now the question - How can I trace back from here when I dont have any parents names to help and no idea of ages other than those supplied on the Census's? Bev X

hi Bev - you have to search on Scotlands people for likely matches in the area they were from - bear in mind - until 11929 the legal minimum age for marriage was 14 (in some cases 12) if you get really stuck - send me some info and I will try to help

scotlandspeople charge £6 for 30 credits and they have 1841 to 1901 cencus, births 1855 to 1905, marriages 1855 to 1930 and deaths 1855 to 1955 they also have parish records 1553 to 1854 If the people you have where born, married and died in Scotland you can find them if they died after 1855 to 1955 what I do is look at the cencus and the year of birth add 1 year on to it and then check if they died the parents names will be on death certificate if they died in England you will only get father's name on it but you can do a parish register search with father's name then see who matches up hope this helps

Hi Sheila Missed you at the last Manchester Meet:-( Hope to see you next time though:-) I have found them on the 1861 Census in Scotland, though Scotlands People, but as they were already married and didn't have any extended family with them, I'm a bit stuck:-( Unfortunately, Carruthers and Deans do not seem to be unusual names so no help there either:-( Bev X

If wife died in Scotland put both names married and maiden name in the search which you can do and if death there it will show up then remember what area they where living in and get rid of ones you don't think it is only way I am afraid you can then work out if husband was still alive or she was all ready a widow

Val Now you've really got me confused - it doesn't take a lot . LOL From the census's I have, they were born and married in Scotland, but by 1871 they were in Cumberland and by 1881 they were in Durham. Both have disappeared by 1891 and I can't find a likely death in Durham for either of them:-( As the parochial record I have for their marriage doesn't give parents names, where do I go from here? As already stated, Carruthers and Deans are not uncommon (unfortunately) Bev X
