I have a relative Joseph Ensor who appears on the 1841 census, as you know the info is very basic on this census, all it says is that he wasn't born in the county, but doesn't say where he was born. In the next census his wife is down as a widow, so the inconsiderate sod has died before I got to find out where he was born, anyone got any ideas?!!!

have you looked for a baptism on www.familysearch.org? Although a generalisation, its true that people didn't move around as much at the beginning of the 19th century as they did later. Chances are he's just over the county border somewhere. You could try a random search of Ensor on the 1851 and see if there's a cluster of births in one particular place. nell

as it's an unusual surname you could try plugging it into family search.... could give you some clues... sarah :-) UPDATE IGI's got 54 of them, mainly in Derby & Warwick, look at his birth year from the 1841 & see how many match.... not that any of them are necessarily him....

Have you tried the IGI on the www.familysearch.org site?

Hi girls, Have tried the IGI and two names come up, one born in Warwick and the other in Coventry, but he is living in Stepney in 1841. He was born in 1796. Tried looking at coverage of his name and there are alot of them in the Coventry area. unfortunately my lot seemed to move around alot, Monmouth Gloucestershire to London, Bristol to London, Somerset to london and the worse lot the irish who put down place of birth ireland, very helpful!!!

If you have 2 possibles, try looking for them both in the 1841 census. You might be able to eliminate the one you found. Did they have any children and where did he marry? Also bear in mind that his age may have been rounded down (or up!) in 1841. nell

I suppose rotten sod didnt wait til after 1837 to marry or remarry did he?

Fuzzy Which Ensor have you got as in my tree I have the name in Dorset Somerset and Cardiff maybe we have a match somewhere Update Sorry blonde moment just realised you have Joseph. Whereas I dont have details of a Joseph we may link somehow. ? Sue

Hey Girls, The rotten bugger married an Ann Collins in 1822 and they lived in Stepney where they had six children, I have looked on the 1841 census and all the other Joseph Ensors were considerate enough to be born within their county, am pretty sure from doing a search he came from warwickshire as that is where the concentration of ensors seem to come from, unfortunately there are two born within a year of each other in warwickshire on the IGI so more or less impossible to eliminate one of them. Why do they always die on us between census' Fed up now so going to have a glass of wine, it may help me think!

Hi Sue, It is Joseph Ensor and he was born approx 1796 he married an Ann Collins, and had the following children, Ann, Joseph, Sarah, Sophia, Benjamin and Louisa, and oh he was a shoemaker!

Dont worry Sue, I have regular blonde moments, think it is the tree building that has addled my brain, either that or the wine!

Hi helen, yes those are the entries I found, as he was born in about 1796, it could be one of two eh?!! I so hate these inconsiderate rellies who die at the most inopportune times!!

Hi nell i have looked then up on the 1841 census again, this time on british origins, it gives me Two Joseph Ensors both aged 45 (right age approx) no-one else close, ie 65 or 35 or younger, one born in county and born born out of the county, mine! How can i now eliminate one from the IGI giving me the correct one?!! had glass of wine, but it not helping! most unusual, I normally have a light bulb moment by the end of the frist glass!!
