Zoe Yes, he's a tin worker on 1891 and 1901. Phoenix Amazingly there is NO John Carter in my husband's family. James' parents and some of his siblings are living in Poplar. I can't find any other likely James or Mary Ann Carter or McCarthy in 1881. James is living in St Luke's, London in 1891 and in Wandsworth in 1901. Mary Ann is living in same street in 1891 as parents were in 1881. I know this is very tenuous, I'm just wondering if the enumerator or whoever gave the information was talking gibberish. But I will check John Carter out. nell |

Hi Nell My gut feeling is that this is a complete red herring: 1.There is a John Carter at number 48 and 2. they are all living in Clerkenwell. Where is the rest of the family? |

I had a similar household where someone was listed as son (head) and it was because his parents were away from home on census night. I guess he had originally put son because he was the son of the usual head of the household but had then been told by the enumerator to put 'head' because he was in charge on census night. Could this be the case with your James. Have you found his parents somewhere else, perhaps as visitors? |

Trying to trace children of great great grandparents James Carter (who began life as Dennis McCarthy) and his wife Elizabeth Alice, in particular, James Carter junior and Mary Ann: 1861 in 5 Wellington Place, Southwark James McCarthy 31 cooper b Clerkenwell Elizabeth wife 31 b Clerkenwell Emily daur. 12, b Clerkenwell William 11 b St Andrews Richard 9 b Clerkenwell (Blind) Eliza 7 b Clerkenwell >>>>James 4 b Clerkenwell >>>>>Mary A. 2 b Southwark 1871 - Mile End Old Town - 5 St. Vincent Street [RG10/557/117 pp 32 & 33] James Carter 40 cooper b Holborn Elizabeth 40 Holborn William 21 Holborn Eliza 17 Clerkenwell >>>James 14 Clerkenwell Mary A. 11 Southwark Charles 5 Southwark Henry 2 Southwark Alfred 8 months Mile End Old Town I have both James and Mary Ann as married couples in 1891, but the only entry I can find at all for either of them in 1881 is this one : 1881 50 Wynyatt Street James Carter abt 1857 Clerkenwell, Middlesex, Son (Head) tinman unm. Anne Carter abt 1860 Clerkenwell, Middlesex, Daughter (Sister) Although they are shown as separate household, the son and daughter bit is puzzling. I can only assume it refers to the household above, which is Simon Brooks abt 1832 Crewkerne, Somerset, Head cloth cutter Elizabeth Brooks abt 1835 Crewkerne, Somerset, Wife no occupation Annie Brooks abt 1859 Clerkenwell, Daughter bookfolder Edwin Brooks abt 1861 Clerkenwell, Son book binder Elizabeth Brooks abt 1863 Clerkenwell, Daughter bookfolder which doesn't appear to be any connection at all. Do you think I am right in assuming that this is my James and that Anne is Mary Ann?? nell |
