You certainly couldn't Nell, but I've had a look at the image and I'm not convinced that's the first name!! She's transcribed as Shelameth on the 1861. Kath. x

That's a bit more like it. Steelsmith Woolley sounds like a character in a Thomas Hardy novel and definitely male. nell

Protheroe causes surprising numbers of problems for some transcribers - I've come across it as Proth, Brothers or Brott.
