I have built a family history website and also one for my local church. The church site is on webspace provided free with a pay as you go internet account. I have built it using frontpage extra which I was able to download from the internet, but if you have microsoft publisher you could build webpages on that. I also downloaded a free ftp program which is needed to upload the web pages to the website. The address for the website is a bit long, http://freespace.and then the provider name and then the name I give to the site but I pay for a much simpler domain name (www.andrewandgeorge.org.uk) which costs about £10 for 2 years and forwards people to my webspace. A tip - once you have built your site submit it to Cyndi's List as then it will show up if people google the name of your village. I have my family history site on there and have had several contacts because of it including a second cousin.

Tom There is also MSN. It's pretty basic and limited, but it might be a good place to start. Have you got FTM software? Because you get a limited amount of free webspace with that - again, a good starting point. I believe there are also other 'free' sites which hopefully somebody will name for you! Mandy :)

Tom, You should be able to buy webspace from your broadband provider. Mine (Blueyonder) gives me a free web address and free webspace. Any extra webspace you need is charged monthly. Regards Sara

have googled but get confused.... I would like to set up a website all about the history of my village - info from census, photos, stories, cemetery indexes, but does anybody know where I can build my own website and do you have to 'buy' an address. Thanks if anyone can help, Tom
