Genealogy Chat

I'm looking for info on my Great Great Uncle, Walter John Purveur (born 1900, Cheltenham). Through military-genealogy(.)com, I've found out that he died aged 18, in WW1, unfortunately 7 days before the Armistice was signed - 04/11/1918. Well, anyway, looking for census info on him, I've found a John Walter rather than Walter John born in 1900, in the right Parish - Holy Trinity (I know through a very good Cheltonian Army website remembering(.)org(.)uk that he has memorials in this Church and School). Was it a common mistake to transcribe the names in the wrong order? Many thanks Suzanne

Thanks Sam Unfortunately no parents names - just a sister, Emily (b 1890) - my Great Grandmother, that I know of so far...

The cwgc shows W J Purveur died 4 11 1918 in the Hampshire Regt. but the original registration Mar Q 1900 shows John Walter Perveur born Cheltenham... the 1901 census shows John Walter in Cheltenham...therefore it may be that his army records are not totally accurate...also they seem only to have his initials

Hello Smiley....My father also with the Manchester Regt and died WW2.................where was your father ? Oh by the way...I can't find an Emily Purveur on the 1890 or 1901 census

Some times a person was known by the middle name and assumed that the other name had to be the middle instead. I have William Henry (on birth and death certs), but he married as Henry William, it's just something that happened - a slip up at the time that is recorded until the end of time.

thanks to your info (especially jim!) i've managed to trace the line to emily's grandfather, john purveur b abt 1830 in maidenhead. would you have any other tips to help me search the perveur name apart from purvem and purreur?

i'm awestruck! that's phenomenal! how does the spelling vary so much? and how do you think of the alternatives jim? suzanne
