I got my grandads records in 3 weeks as well, I was well impressed! The information in them is fascinating and gives a real insight to how my grandfather was when he joined. I just annoyed now because I actually took the time and trouble to get them (and paid the 30 quid) and now my aunty and uncle want a photocopy of them and expect it for free! I wouldn't mind but they knew I was thinking of sending off and they knew how much they would cost me. grrrrrr! Sam x

hiya, you ARE lucky, my grt grt grandad was a grenadier guard, i know when he was born, where he died, where he married, and also have a rough idea as to when he may have left, I contacted Gren Guards archivist, and they sent me back a rather 'curt' reply saying they cant find, wont look for anything, so now i'm stuck, at 1841. cant go back any further, sorry guys, moan over julie

I forgot to say that as well as all the photocopied service record papers, they also sent me his ORIGINAL blue Record Of Service book (Army Book 439). .....Hmmmmm....I wondered if they meant to do that??? LOL Merry

Hello Sam, It's now £30 unless the person applying is the person themselves or their widow(er).....In which case they are free. You have to sign a declaration that you are next of kin. In my case the next of kin is my mum....she signed the form and I sent the cheque.....Hmmmmmmm.....think I may have been duped there!! LOL Merry

They must have been VERY busy, catching up with the back log. Mine took over a year to come .... and I've now been waiting well over a year for my Grandfathers Medals. Congratulations.... Elaine ;-)

Lucky you - I sent for some last week so will keep my fingers crossed that I don´t have to wait too long.

On 1st May I sent of for Granddad's WW1 army records. Had a reply from Min of Defence apologising for the expected 8 month wait. Their letter was dated 8th May. This morning, just three weeks later, a fat brown envelope plopped onto the mat! Hooray!!.....and they included his WW1 army stuff which was missing at Kew because the MoD still had it, LOL (this was because his disability pension from WW1 meant that his file was not closed by 1921 and so was just continued in 1939). There's lots of personal bits I was not aware of before!! Must go as I have to get my fine tooth comb out! LOL Happy Hunting - Merry x
