Two Maiden Names in Marriage Record??

Hi Merry - thanks for that. I knew that it was only for a certain time during the 20thC but was unsure of the dates. No doubt it was the women's lib movement that killed it off in the 60's! After all, the blokes aren't revealed as being previously married in the index, so why should the women? It was useful for us family historians tho! Richard

Elaine, Richard, Merry Sorry I didn't come back to you sooner, my computer crashed (hubby downloading games again - LOL!). Thanks for the suggestions, I will order the certificate using just the groom's name and see what it says. Regards Lynne

In reply to Richard: March quarter 1912 to September quarter 1962 -- if female was previously married, index shows maiden name and married name (from 1837online) Merry

By 1950 it would be that she had been known by both surnames previously - i.e. maiden name and previous married name. In such cases a person was indexed under both surnames. Can't remember when they started doing this, but it was mid-20thC. Richard

Hi Nell Thanks for the advice. I can't look on a census as the marriage was in 1950. Regards Lynne

Possibly she was previously married and the surnames are her maiden and former married names. Or she may have been brought up by a stepfather and one of the surnames is hers. You don't say which year - could you look for her in a census? nell

Searching for a marriage for one of my Ford ancestors, in the Spouse column it says McPartland or Cartwright. On checking these maiden names, they are both listed showing Ford and the same reference. Does anyone know why this person would be listed twice please? Thanks in advance. Lynne
