Sylvia - quite agree that 1837 can and is used as a back up - but in my opinion I can see no point in doing the total search there when the Ancestry images are free. Start with Ancestry - then check any missing pages/quarters on 1837.

Hi Elaine, Yesterday I looked for a death on Ancestry. Found the ref, and asked for image. The whole page with this surname was missing. I like to check the image to be absolutely sure so 1837 is a handy fallback. Sylvia.

There is no need to use 1837 - which is a subscription site. Ancestry has exactly the same information on the complete BMD images - and it is FREE

Well since the kids were all born around Croyden and he was from Bethnal which is the other side of London then it's his area I guess. After the war they went and stayed in Blackpool with her family while my grandfather went came to Aus, they followed soon after.

Did they end up setttling down in her area or his? Unless youve trawled the index year by year you will not have found them, those years arent covered any other way unless you try a local bmd site (some have up to date or partial up to date search databases). I see your point about the Catholic bit etc,but there have been plenty of people even then who have done their own thing, its a question of circumstance I guess.

Elaine I'll try that too, thanks. Jess no he was born in Bethnal Green and she was born in Blackpool. I'd love to know how they came to meet being so far from each other. Gypsyjoe

Have you checked the complete images on Ancestry http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx You need to search quarter by quarter, year by year. Time consuming but free!

What are the chances they didn't get married but she took on his surname anyway. My grandmother Marion Jane Bailey to Albert George Foley. Their children were born in and around Croyden between 1934 and 1941. He was a Catholic she was C of E. She was also 5 years his senior. I've looked and looked and can't find a record anywhere. My dad and uncles don't know if they were or not either, so this doesn't help me either. If anyone can give me clues it would be appreciated. Gypsyjoe
