Birth re-registered

Thanks for your replies. It still seems strange that the birth was re-registered three years after the marriage. And it seems I won't be able to check out the story that his father registered the birth and gave him a name his mother didn't like. Oh well.......

that might have been true years ago but if a child is recognised child married parents or not he/she still has the same inheritance rights in cases of intestacy, and are deemed next of kin.

Since (find the useful dates thread! - I can't remember which year) parents have been able to re-register their child with the father's surname if the marriage takes place after the original registration. The new registration is a replacement (treated as if a correction) of the old registration which is then no longer vaild. I would think it extremely unlikely that you would be able to obtain a copy of the original registration. Christine

I have discovered that, according to my father's birth certificate, his birth was registered four years after his actual birth. On further investigation I discovered that his parents hadn't been married at the time of his birth and the registration had in fact been made at the time of his birth, under his mother's maiden name. I tried to obtain a copy of the original birth certificate and it has come back with 'Re-reg' written on the pink application and the GRO reference I supplied crossed out and replaced with the reference from the later registration. The supplied certificate is a copy of the one I already have. Does this mean that I can't get a copy of the original certificate? I didn't even know that a birth could be re-registered! Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
