Hi All, I have found my Ashton family back to Richard Ashton, who was born approx 1796 in Gnosall, Staffordshire according to the 1851 Census (and 1861 and 1871:-). How do I now go about finding any brothers and sisters and his parents please? I have his marriage cert, but as it is pre 1837, it doesn't give much detail:-( Bev X |

hiya, do you mean copy of parish reg for marriage? as certs didnt happen until 1837, i usually use hugh wallis's site, it holds alot of PR's and is easier to search than familysearch, hope this helps julie |

First port of call is the IGI (international geneacology Index) on the familysearch.org website. Suzanne |

There is a baptism on the IGI: RICHD. <ASHTON> Male -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: 30 APR 1797 Gnosall, Stafford, England Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: WM. ASHTON Family Mother: MARGT. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record This looks pretty possible! From the IGI: RICHD. <ASHTON> Event(s): Birth: Christening: 30 APR 1797 Gnosall, Stafford, England Parents: Father: WM. ASHTON Mother: MARGT. To find siblings if they are on there enter the parents names in the parents names boxes and see if there are any othre Ashtons born to them baptised in the same area. The same for the parents marriage enter in their names and rough years etc. Suzanne |

Flippin eck guys that was quick - I only went to empty the washing machine:-) Yes that is him on the 1841 census. I like the IGI entry too, but how do I confirm that this is indeed my Richard Ashton? Unfortunately - Richard Ashton is as common as John Brown in those parts - I have at least one in every generation so far, so 7 at the last count and just the direct line! Yes the marriage entry I have is dated 1821 - and lists him as a widower!! Bev X |

For the village of Gnossall there are a total of 10 christenings and 2 marriages with the name Ashton to record-they could come in handy when piecing things together. Added to that any males born there-you are best looking for their marriages in neighboring villages as they usually wed in the brides home village despite coming back to home themselves. So getting a feel of the area helps. |

Hi Alter So would it be safe to assume that these are all the same family? I do know that they were all butchers too:-) Is there anything else that would help me to tie them all together so to speak? Bev X |

hiya, once you have DOB's you can use hugh wallis site to see if there is a possible marriage, usually with 1st born child, is purely a matter of looking at all ashtons in that area. then looking at individuals and matching parents to children, when yoiu get onto Hughs site it all becomes self explanatory, once you have apossible list it means you checking with rellavant parish records, this is where the real research begins hope this helps julie |

Julie Looks like I'm going to be very busy next week then - I've got a day off work and booked myself into Stafford Records Office. Better take my specs with me:-)lol So if I get details of all the Ashtons, I should be able to piece them together with some certainty then? I just cant get my head around how confident I can be that I have the right faimly Bev X |

hiya firstly i'd have aplay with hugh's site, use info from 1841 census, to familiarise yourself and then when youre feeling abit more with it, have look for rich/fanny marriage, maybe about 1816, havea play, see for yourself Happy hunting!! nothing is 100% certain, only that we die!!! julie |
