Genealogy Chat

..from a computer thicky.....I have a couple of Excell files with info on -rows of events all numbered and colour coded with columns for time place etc......I have tried adding to them,and altering them,and have asked to save when the box comes up,but they are defaulting to the original sent ????.....how can I sort this please.??

it might not be relevant but are the 2 excels the same version ie the one you have received and the one on your pc if your version is older it might not have the facility to add colour etc although I think it would tell you when you tried to save? sorry, not much help am I netti

I would be surprsed if that was the reason,what is annoying is that it did save the changes at first,then changed back to the original later in the day !!

Alter Hubby is an IT man (that sounds good doesn't it?!). He says instead of just clicking on 'save', click on 'save as' and give it a new name. Apparently, whenever he receives a file, he always saves it with a new name before he does anything with it. (Don't ask me why though). Mandy :)

If it saved it earlier, it must be there somewhere? Check through your documents and it may be there as a separate file. Debby ,

ive just gone to documents ,opened it up.Tried the changes-it asked me if i wanted to save new changes,I clicked on yes-closed the file,then opened it up,and the changes are still there ....!.....its taking the mick out of me methinks.....time for a gin.

You sure you didn't have the gin first? ;)

Alter, try this. First open the file of interest>then put your cursor over the 'File' heading in top left corner the >run your cursor down to 'Permissions' and check that the 'Unrestricted Access' option is ticked. If not run your cursor back up the column to 'Save As' and click it (Now as you cannot have two files with same name add an say an X to the end of the file name) Next open the NEW FILE and check the things mentioned above ensuring you have Unrestricted Access then try altering it to suit your requirements. If you make alterations to the File and then 'Save' It you save ONE file only > the original in its ALTERED format >>>> BUT if you 'Save As' you make a NEW File and save this new file in its ALTERED form but leave the original as it was.
