Hello, could anyone help me please. I am trying to trace my maternal grandmothers family. I have found someone that I believe to be her father mentioned in the 1881 census (they were a family of greengrocers). In 1891 I can find the parents and some of the siblings but not of course the one I want to follow! His name is George Maslen, born in Shoreditch about 1860-61. His daughter (my grandma) was Gertrude. I can find no trace of him, wife or children on the 1901 census. Why does this happen? Any information gratefully received.

probably mistranscribed. Are you expecting to find Gertrude on the 1901 census - if so do you have her year and place of birth

Thankyou for your replies. Teresa I think you've found them!The dates and places of birth for George and his brother Thomas are right, and so is the year for Gertrude 1888. Gertrude's middle name was Annie (possibly after her mother). Elaine I've got no idea of George's wife's name - what is the quickest way to find this out? Thanks again, I'm thrilled to have found them so quickly.

Elaine and Theresa, there is no trace of George or his wife or eldest daughters on the 1891 census - I've tried Masten and Maslin as alternative spellings - any other suggestions?

Had a look for 1891 couldn't see them though. It does look like enumeration districts 3,4 and 10 are missing for St. Mary le Bow on the 1891.

Even tried 1837online for 1891 No matches for Annie, Gertrude or Rose but two matches for George Maslen age 29 - one in West Ham and the other in Mile End Old Town. Did not check them out as a bit pointless if none of the others show up. Maureen

This looks like Gertrude´s birth registration Gertrude Annie Maslen Year of Registration: 1887 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Romford County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 334 Her birth certificate will show mother´s maiden name which might help you find a marriage.
