I have got: physician & surgeon MD .................M R C S London the word in the gap looks like philadelph(ia) to me but why have that and London in the title? Timothy was a valet in London in 1861. Could he really have trained as a doctor? netti |

i think the guts of what you have is correct , there are two qualifications listed , one gained in London and the other in philadelphia perhaps? |

It sounds like he became a doctor in Philidelphia, then became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, which he'd have to join to be able to work as a surgeon over here. If he was a valet in 1861, maybe he invented his qualifications from America????? or am I being too sceptical. Kath. x |

I cant be sure if we are talking about the same person. the place of birth in 1851 is given as Worston Gt Melvern, which I believe is in Lancashire or Staffordshire. But the individual you are talking about in 1871 and 1881 states that he was born in Leigh, Worcestershire. I know enumerators make mistakes but not usually counties and in consequetive years. I do find it hard to believe that a servant qualified at such a late age as a doctor. Just my thoughts Regards Sue |

thanks for the replies ancestry have mistranscribed Great Malvern, Worcestershire - which adjoins the parish of Leigh I too am sceptical he was a real doctor. next time I am at the record office I will see if he left a will. netti |
