Posted for help earlier and got some tips - have trawled through all James Mathews/Matthews marriage going back from 1880 - I assume they were married cos have them on 1881 census as couple - so started 1880 back to 1871 where I have him as single but can't find ref. to marriage - anyone have any ideas He is James Matthews, spelling variants as above also Mathewes on earlier census - Married a Louisa both born in Margaretting Essex, on 1881 they had 3 children, Annie and 2 boys, is the only answer likely to be that they never actually married?? Or are the Marriage databases not up to date, I've found his parents marriage so a bit surprised not to find this, having said that I cant find my own grandparents and I have a certificate for that! Any more tips greatfully rec'd...... Gill

Sounds like you are just searching the freebmd section which isnt complete. You need to look at the full bmd index images.

Is this one of the sons? Name: Alfred Matthews Year of Registration: 1890 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Chelmsford County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 447 The cert would give mother's surname, and aid cross-checking. Another child? Name: Herbert Matthews Year of Registration: 1886 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Chelmsford County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 394 Reg
