CENSUS ACCURACY

Just been reading Ancestors Mag and saw an article about the accuracy of the censuses on different websites. Apparently Origins comes out top with Ancestry next and Genealogy(?) was last. I was under the impression that they used the same databases, but apparently not. So if you can't find a name on one website, it could be somewhere else with a different spelling. best wishes all Chris

Each will have paid their own transcribers to make the transcriptions which form the databases. Every transcriber will have their own idiosyncracies and pet errors. I know I transpose characters when I'm typing - and sometimes when I'm writing. I don't always see the error, so that's the kind of thing I'd be doing wrong. Not all transcribers have the background knowledge - or the inclination to spend the time - to get the transcriptions accurate. But thanks for the tip - ceratinly useful to have it brought to the fore! Christine

Didn't think they paid their own transcribers, thought they would buy into each other's databases...so it is useful to know if you are at a real deadend
