Help finding missing wife

Can anyone help me? I have managed to discover that my grt grt grandfather was married not twice as I thought, but 4 times!! I have confirmed wives numbers 1 and 3 by marriage certs and I know number 4 is correct as I have living relatives who knew her. It's just number 2 who is proving a bit mysterious. I am fairly sure there was a number 2 because his wife in 1891 was Mary Jane and in 1901 was Mary Ann. I have confirmed by death cert that Mary Jane died in 1896. Although same approx years of birth, the two Marys have very different places of birth too. My problem is that I can't find anything on Mary Ann other than this census entry. Can anyone help? I will post more details in a minute.

Husband: Wilson Pounder, born 1856 Leeds, died 1930 Hull Wife 1: Mary Jane Pollard, born 1854 Leeds, died 1896 Hull They married 1876 in Hull Wife 2: Mary Ann ? born c1855 Norwich. All I know is that they were married by 1901 and his next marriage took place in 1909. All Hull registrations were in Sculcoates district.

Had a look on Yorks BMD and found these potentially relevant records (not all, I recognise, but perhaps they may be related?): Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference 1] Yorkshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1876 POUNDER Wilson POLLARD Mary J St John, Newton Leeds CE54/98 Mystery Marriage! 3] Yorkshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1909 POUNDER Wilson CAMM Annie F Sculcoates Register Offices Hull SRO/74/121 4] Yorkshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1919 POUNDER Wilson SHIPP Lizzie Sculcoates Register Offices Hull SRO/100/54 Yorkshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1945 POUNDER Wilson H BRADY Florence A St Giles, Marfleet Hull HL/2/207 Christine

Hi Christine - thanks for looking. Annie Camm is no.3 and Lizzie Shipp is no.4. The last entry is after Wilson had died, so I think that must be another relative (will look into that). This is the thing that is puzzling me: Wilson Pounder is an easy name to find - yet nothing is coming up relating to Mary Ann - makes me a bit dubious about her, yet she is there in 1901 after Mary Jane had died!!

The only marriages (up to 1920) for Wilson are 1879, 1909 and 1919.

Here's something for you to investigate! Lets say he was only living with Mary Ann in 1901..... I wondered if it was this woman: 1891: Lily Moore abt 1879 Hull, Yorkshire, England Daughter Sculcoates Yorkshire >>>>Mary Ann Moore abt 1853 Norwich, Norfolk, England Head Sculcoates Yorkshire Nelly Moore abt 1880 Hull, Yorkshire, England Daughter Sculcoates Yorkshire I can't find her in 1901 in the name Moore - though I haven't looked very hard!! In 1901 Mrs Pounder says she was born circa 1855 and then (there is no obvious death I can see for a Mary Ann Pounder) there is this death reg: Deaths Sep 1904 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOORE Mary Ann 49 Sculcoates 9d 131 Should this be the answer (and it's only a slim chance!).....then it would appear it is OK to lie to the census enumerator, but not to the registrar!!! LOL Merry

Oooh, interesting - thanks Merry, I will investigate further!

I've done a similar exercise to Merry in 1891 and found Mary Ann Pearson, wife of Burridge Pearson (or ''Searson'' as currently transcribed by Ancestry), who died 1898 Q1. Can't find a death for her, nor can I see her in 1901 under that name. The marriage - he could have been mistranscribed by GRO (as they did my name!) - or it may not have got to the GRO list and be in an untranscribed bit of the Yorks list, or may have been in Norfolk - or they may not actually have married.
