Not really. The witnesses were William Tookey and Ann Forster, neither name means anything to me. I suppose I'm hoping that the parish register would give James's occupation, if it said he was a steward that would be good evidence. But really I'm not confident. If Robert had lived just a year and a bit longer he would have made it on to the 1851 census. Some people just have to be awkward. Andrew.

Yes, CRO's will do lookups for you for a fee, or recommend someone to do a lookup, or supply you with a list of researchers who visit them. The problem is....how will you know even if it is the right marriage?.....and as you say, it probably isn't! Merry

Well, I suppose I'm going to have to check the parish registers for Dalkeith to see if this is the right one. But it's a long way to travel for what is a bit of a long shot. Does anyone know if county record offices would do this sort of search for me if I were to email them with the details? I've only ever visited county record offices in person, and don't know if they offer that sort of service. If they do, do they charge for it? Andrew.

Thanks Merry, I hadn't thought of looking in Scotland. It had occurred to me that his mother's name might have been Hardy but I hadn't found anything in England. Snowdrops, I have seen this before but I've looked at the original parish register and that James was a baker not a steward, and there doesn't seem to be any Hardy connection. Andrew.

Andrew have you checked the IGI? There is this listing and his father is James Rutherford and mother Margaret - don't know if it's the one you're after, may be worth investigating? 1. Can anyone help? I want to trace the parents of my great great grandfather Robert Hardy Rutherford. He married Elizabeth Slograve on 13 Oct 1841, at St Marylebone parish church. His address was given as 37 Rupert Street (near the Haymarket in London). His father’s name was given as James Rutherford, steward. I have not found him in the 1841 census. (And I don’t expect to, if his address was the same as that given above. The 1841 census returns for Rupert Street have not survived.) He died 18 Jan 1850, his age was given as 36 on death certificate. So he would have been born in 1813 or very early in 1814. And this is all I know, I have no idea where he was born or who his mother was. Can anyone suggest where I could go from here?
