Hi, am just branching out having found loads of census info. looking at births/marriages to try to confirm if I've got right people with similar names - is there anyway to find name of spouse - records only seem to show mans name, I know first name (I think!!!) but would like to trace maiden name - I guess it's the old £7 send off for cert. again - Unfortunately this is a wedding approx 1840 so too late for pallets which seems to show both names. Any ideas? Gill

Are they on freebmd? You can click on the page number of the reference to see others on the page. You can then try to match up the couples using next census. Works best with less common first names. Gwyn

Fine the marriage entry on Ancestry transcribed records, or on FreeBMD. Then click the page number.....you will see all the names transcribed for that page.....one of whom MAY be the spouse. Best if you tell the name/area you are after, so someone can go through your example!! Merry

If the marriage is between the '41 and '51 and you have two or four possible brides do any of them look a possible match in the later census. For instance if the groom can be followed through from single to married and the bride is called Ann have you more than one Ann as a bride? If you only have one you will have a good chance of finding her maiden name (name at time of marriage) without the cert. If you post the grooms details name, place and year of birth, plus any known cenus details then maybe it can be worked out. The advantage with the cert of course is you will get fathers details, and witnesses can lead you off down other family lines as well. It may be possible to find a possible match through Parish records as well. Have you tried familysearch? Glen

Have tried the 3 different ways of spelling surname, matthews, mathews, and mathewes from various family census forms, I know James (born around 1848) in Margaretting, Essex was married (?) to a Louise and want to find her maiden name, but I cannot find marriage info. They were together on 1881 cencus, and I have james on 1871 still with parents so assume marriage between 71 and 81 but cannot find - any help gratefully received. Is there anyway you can get a search box up that offers chance of entering ladies chrsitian name?? Gill
