Hi there I hope someone can help. I have hit a problem trying to 'merge' two lines of my tree. The same families join via two different marriages and i thought it would automatically recognise the same details but i now have 2 records for the same union. I know i havent explained this properly but dont quite know how to tell you of the problem. Any help greatly appreciated. Chris |

Unfortunately you can't do it on this site, that's one of the downsides. Sam x |

Download (free) PAF5 from familysearch(.)org Export your genes tree to it Do all the mercging/connecting you like Export the tree as a gedcom and upload it to GR Keep working in PAF as you build your tree with periodic uploads to GR to meke contacts ....and you have a backup for your tree because it's in two places Peter |

thanks for that Peter. I have family tree maker programme so can i export my tree from here to that to do the merging instead of downloading another file. Have only just started with the family tree maker programme so havent got all my records in that one yet. Also how long do you think it will take and will i have to delete my tree on genes before i import it back. Sorry to be a nuisance but i am not really good with computers. Chris |

It doesn't take long and you can now put your tree back into GR without deleting - plus if anything goes wrong you have your backup copy. It all depends on how big your tree is - mine is big and only takes 3 or 4 minutes Peter |

Save the merged file as a .Ged file on your hard drive, go to import/export tree on the left of this page and import it..... Peter |

Hi Christine, You may have difficulties Importing your Gedcom to GR. The Import Gedcom function has been broken since sometime last week. They hope to fix it 'soon'. Please do not rely on GR as the primary location for your tree. Your own PC, with Family History software ie FTM, is the place for it. Paul |
