Just wondering what kind of information you get back to you enquire about an ancestor that served in the navy. Ive written to them and they requested copies of certs proving next of kin. Which i posted yesterday. What kind of stuff do you get back from them if they find your relative. Has anyone ever done this? Deborah

Hi Deborah If you saw my thread yesterday, you will have noticed that I was very excited because my grandfather's RN was actually on the National Archives website and I was able to download it! This was after the RN Personnel dept had returned my cheque saying that his records were too early to be in their archives (I think they have 1929 onwards but would need to check letter to be sure). My grandad's record gives the usual name, dob, place of birth etc, plus height and general description on joining, and again on leaving the service. It gives his service number, which we didn't have before. It then lists all the ships he served on and the dates, and his rating for each one. Also his 'character and ability' on each posting (satisfactory, superior, etc), and then his medals and badges. Mandy :)

Im not 100% sure when he joined, but he wasnt born until 1922, so it would have been after 1929. Thanks,
