Patricia www(.)1837online(.)co(.) uk is the site being referred to. Remove the brackets. Useful for war deaths etc It has the Soldiers Died in the Great War database. This is a publication which originally came in about 18 volumes and is also on CD. It's useful to use in conjunction with the CWGC site to pin down elusive deaths from WW1. As regards your ancestor, if he's on the Helles Memorial then he has no known grave. Did you find him on the CWGC site? Do you know his date of death? Depends on what you want to find out. Might be some more information on Soldiers Died. You could also look online at the Medal Cards at the National Archives. There's also a chance that his service record may be one of those which survives, but these cannot be accessed online. After all that the 1901 census seems an obvious step. Denis.

Please, what is 1837? My grandfather John Jones was killed in ww1. He is on the Helles Memorial (I suppose that means that he has no grave) but it doesn't give information on where and when he was born. His father was also John Jones (deceased in 1915) and with a name like that it's like looking for a needle in a haystack on a census. Any tips on where to look? Thanks. Froggy

Try the Great War Forum at www(.)1914-1918(.)net Some of the guy's on there have the SDGW book/CD - Soldiers Who Died During The Great War - they will willingly do a look-up, it contains limited information on some of the solidiers but you might get lucky, mine had date of birth and parents age Good luck!

You need to choose the ' WW1 Soldiers Died' option. However, it does not always present the date of enlistment. Apart from that all of the various sources relating to WW1 are full of errors and some entries can be far less comprehensive than others. They need to be used carefully. Denis.

Just looked on GWCG site. It has the same info as 1837 for him (except a grave ref). Phoenix, where do I find that information about age at enlistment and stuff?

Just a word of warning here for the avoidance of doubt. If you want a legal death 'cert' then you go through GRO. The details needed can be found on 1837. The CWGC cert is not the same thing. Apart from that the CWGC site will provide details of parents etc but often they just don't have that information. Denis.

1837 also has a database for soldiers who died in WW1, different to cwgc. It should show age at enlistment and where enlisted. Good luck!

Have you tried www.cwgc.org?? They have all the names and certs for people who died in the War. On the certs, it will also give info of parents and any wife and kids left behind - so very useful.
