My certs turned up in the post today, there was on I had hoped would give us some answers : - My MIL married in Nov 1944 at the age of 19 to a Mr Davey. Her name when she married was Joyce Helena Hewlett, Father's name Francis George Hewlett She married again in Sept 1945 to a Mr Bickell her name then Joyce Helena Davey still 19 and a spinster. Fathers name was Francis George Davey!!!!! I have looked and had help to look for Mr Davey's death but cant find one. How very strange. Janey

It suggests that Mr. Davey was still alive when Joyce Helena married for the second time, doesn't it? She gave her right name, but said she was a spinster so she would be allowed to get married. (Presumably not divorced, or she would have said so, and anyway, I don't think divorces could come through that quickly.) As for father's name, this kind of thing has come up before, and a pet theory of mine is that the vicar or registrar asked, 'What is your father's name?' and the bride (or groom) only gave the Christian name and the vicar / registrar assumed the surname would be the same. Doesn't help much but I found a marriage for a widow and the father had her married name and his proper christian name. Heather
