What about this birth registration - I know it says Frances Ann - are you sure it was Frances Alice? (1861 image has Frances Alice) Frances Ann Elliott Year of Registration: 1859 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Kensington County: Greater London, London, Middlesex Volume: 1a Page: 39

I wouldn't think that Eliza Elliott birth registration is likely to be the right one as it is so long after her birth. But it could be that they didn't register the children's births at all, annoyingly enough. Presumably you have checked other spellings of the surname too? Kate.

I now know from the parish records of Old Church St Pancras London that Eliza Ann Elliott was born 9/12/1856 and christened 5/04/1857. Father Thomas Elliott , mother Ann. How do I get a copy of a birth certificate?

Thanks Kate and Christine for your quick replies. I haven't got a birth certificate for Eliza Ann or her sister. The idea about Cirencester seems plausible as I haven't found a Casucester on the map or with the help of Google? After London, Thomas and family were sent to work on the Duke of Bridgewater's estate in Lancashire to look after the horses (he was the only person who could do a lefthanded clip on a horse (whatever that might be), which explains how Eliza Ann came to be married in Prescot Lancashire to Joseph Roberts from Bebington, Cheshire. What should you be studying Christine? Not French I suppose! Patricia

Looking at 1861 image, I wonder if his place of birth is Cirencester.

Your best bet would be to get the birth certificate for one of the children as that will give you the mother's maiden name (if you are not certain that they both had the same mother, you are best to get your great-grandmother's birth certificate, but if you know they had the same mother then whichever one is easier to find in the indexes.) When you know their mother's maiden name you will be able to search for the marriage. As it is, there could be loads of Thomas Elliotts who married an Ann, and you wouldn't know which was the right one! Kate.

How can I find out where my gt gt grandfather Thomas Elliott was married. Thomas was born in Casucester, Gloucestershire in 1821. I have found him in the 1861 census married to Ann .... born 1829 in Reading Berkshire. They were living in London, Westminster St James where he was an ostler at the Prince of Wales's stables. There is no trace of him in any other census. He had 2 children, Eliza Ann (my gt grandmother and Frances Alice neither of which are to be found in any census before Eliza in 1901. Thanks for any help. I live in France and can't just pop over and search unless I know a place to start. Patricia Renard
