Hi there, I am trying to find my great great grandfather in the 1861 census, yet after doing several searchs on variations of his name and simply putting in his surname and age (+or - 5 years), I can't find him. There is a possibility that he was in the Navy as some of his family did do that so I was wondering if anybody knows how I might find out if somebody was in the Navy at that time and what happened if they were out of the country at the time of the census. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

In theory (LOL) if he was in the ROYAL Navy, then he should still show on the census unless his ship was docked in a foreign port (and even some of those ships are on the census). Other shipping was not included unless it was in port in the UK (ie, not at sea) Have you tried the National Archives for his Navy record? Merry |
