One of my family members married a 'Rives' family member, so wanted to know a bit about the surname. I have found the 1861 census with the family details and birthplace says Spitalfields, Mexico. Do you think they orignated from Mexico. Rives is a spanish name I think. |

I should think it's far more likely they were from Spitalfields, Middlesex!! I expect the transcriber hit the wrong button. I see there are 25 people in 1861 who are apparently from Spitalfields, Mexico, but living in Spitalfields, Middlesex!! Merry |

I would think it is meant to be Middx short for Middlesex. Rives is another spelling of Reeves coming from Reeve a magistrate.Put away the castanets!! Sylvia. |

Dont think so it has Spitalfields, Mexico by three of the four peeps names on the census, the fourth person had Dublin Ireland. In the county it quite clearly says Middx not sure what to think really. |

Possibly the ancestry transcribers use a lookup table where you can enter MX and it translates it to Mexico? Kate. |
