Hi there.. I have John smith (don't worry I don't need a look-up.. LoL)... on Cencus's, Marriages/Deaths of his children as well as Death Cert' of his (widow) wife.. his job Description Skips between... Tea maker/Tea Dealer/Grocer/Commercial Travellor.. are these all the same job?? just descibed differantly??.. One of his children was my Gt.Granfather the only child from their brood to be born America Or Canada... (His cencus's change from one place to the other!!)... so would his fathers job have been a popular job anywhere in particular?? Feel free to let me know what you think!

Half my rellies have these jobs (well, it feels like half!). Yes, the jobs all come under the same ''umbrella'', though taken literally, they are not all the same job. If you are using this info to help decide if you are looking at the same person in various censuses, etc, I would say it's a good indication! Merry

Thank you ladies.. I take it was a popular job then! No not on a hunt have the father on all cencus's his marriage his parents.. but from old family letters it makes out where-ever the family went between 1854?-1860? either America or Canada? The father retuned too and nothing after? (but they also say that the father died there, that is why the rest of the family returned to scotland.. but I found he had returned to scotland with the family. My Gt.Granfather Charles on cencus changes from America to Canada the 1901 Cencus for him in Durham says something like America Birth ?? July ?? ?? on the where born section... It's always the men in my tree!! LoL Sui

Oh, is he the 42-year-old gas works foreman????? That says ''America, British Subject'' But the letters ''Subj'' do look like July! Merry

I suppose ''America'' could just refer to North America...and so includes Canada? Merry

sorry took so long to reply.. had to feed the animals (children & hubby are quite full now!! LoL) Yes Merry' the Gas worker is my Charles... I thought that said July!! (sui grabs for mega-magnifier)oh!! okay!! So it could still be either Canada or America. I do know Charles had quite some diffeculty when it came to him getting a pension, trying to find a birth Certificate for himself.. but he must have done it in the end... (sui going in strop!!).. so why can't I. Thanks for looking Merry :-))))))))))))))))))
