I looked up Ancestry and 1837 for info and I have 14 records for a death of Patrick Hughes from 2nd Qtr 1858 to 2nd Qtr 1861. Do I have to order the 14 certs to make sure I get the right one? Or does anybody have any idea on how to narrow the search? JJH |

Is your chap still alive in the 1861 census? If so, where is he living then? If not, where was he in the 1851 census? |

Sorry, I was called away there. No Heather, Patrick Hughes was born in 1858 in Scotland but he isn't there on the 1861 census.I am also looking for an English birth of a younger sibling named Philip circa 1862. Age reg as 9 in 1871 census in Scotland. These details were found for me by Liz in Scotland, to whom I owe many thanks. Consulting Ancestry and 1837 I have found 10 birth regs between last Qtr 1858 and 4th Qtr 1863, but I don't know where this Philip was born. Any ideas on how to proceed would be very grateful.JJH |

Can I just check I'm reading this correctly? Patrick Hughes was born 1858 in Scotland In 1861 he is not on the Scottish census Were his parents on the Scottish census? Have you checked that Patrick isn't on the English census? On the 1871 Scottish census there is a nine year old named Philip Hughes, born England. So.......the parents had a child in Scotland (1858) nipped into England with him (or send him to England). He died. They nipped back in time for the 1861 census.....then rushed back into England for the birth of the next child.....and then back to Scotland before 1871. Who were the parents? Merry |

Yes I do Georgina. You have helped me with this family in the past. The parents were Michael Hughes and Isabella Gordon. Remember we couldn't find a marriage (naughty naughty) and then you and Liz found them in 1861, 1871, and 1881 for me. Well I'm still chasing them!!!!. I am hoping to go to Park Circus tomorrow on spec to see if I can look up more info.JJH |

Merry, Liz in Scotland found that 1871 census info for me a while ago. So it looks like I will have to send for the Philip certs one at a time, maybe starting with the most Northerly first.JJH |

Before you go spending a megafortune, remember that registrations of births and deaths was not compulsory in Eng/Wales (I don't know about Scotland) until 1875. Though it is more common for births to go unregistered, some deaths are also unregistered. I would say that a travelling family might fall into the most likely catagory not to get around to registering a child's death. Not to say they didn't, of course........just something to bear in mind! Merry |

Thanks for that advice Merry. I will bear that in mind. I'm just searching IGI batches for maybe some more siblings lurking around. Once again, thanks to all those who responded to my plea. JJH |

According to the IGI these are the children born to Michael Hughes & Isabella Gordon, so if they had another son Philip in England it must have been after 1869... 1. DANIEL HUGHES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 10 JAN 1873 Carluke, Lanark, Scotland 2. PATRICK HUGHES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 01 MAR 1858 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland 3. MARY HUGHES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 15 FEB 1867 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland 4. ANDREW HUGHES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 20 OCT 1869 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland 5. MICHAEL HUGHES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 05 JAN 1860 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland 6. JOHN HUGHES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 01 MAY 1865 Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland Georgina. |

........but there's a gap between numbers 5 and 6 in that list that a Philip could slot into! If he was born in England he might well not be on the IGI. Merry |

Can you just remind me where we found them on the 1861/71 & 1881 census? Merry is right there is enough years between children for Philip to be born. Georgina. |

Just a thought, did you try for Peter instead of Patrick? My brother has never been called by his birth name he always gets called Peter - going to confuse the heck out of anyone looking at censuses 1971 on! The deaths you found on Ancestry, any clue as to how old Patrick would have been? I think I would try to eliminate some of them first before ordering any certs, but it's not easy if there's tight timescale. If father really was on the railways, well all trains stop at Crewe! I'm more used to Scotlandspeople, but have Ancestry and have found a few snippets on there. He'll be found when he's good and ready, I suppose. Good luck, Christine |
