I have a marriage cert for g g/m,to George Chambers in 1885. A witness to the marriage was George Graby and he is head of the house g g/m and g g/f lived in during the '91 census. I have just found a birth and death for George Graby Chambers in 1897. Worth a punt for the cert just for curiosity value?I wonder....... Glen

Might be worth a go, but he may just have been the landlord of the house they lived in and was asked to act as a witness at the wedding. On the other hand, he may be a rellie of some sort.

George Graby was the landlord,g g/f was George Chambers. Just curious as to how the two names got 'mixed' with this little George Graby Chambers baby. Glen

Glen Perhaps George Graby was the babies father. When did George Chambers die? Derek.

Glen, if they were close enough mates to have him as a witness to the marriage I reckon there would be a good chance he would also be a godparent and hence the kiddies name. Interesting to know if there was a stronger tie there.

I'd go for it Glen - you never know! Just got a marriage certificate for what I hoped would be my ggm's illegitimate daughter, Daisy Stinchcombe. Two probs - Daisy had acquired 2 middle names and would only have been 16 at the time. In 91 and 01 census she was living with the Tuck family, described first as their niece and 2nd as their granddaughter. The clincher on the certificate was John Tuck as a witness - her 'uncle' or 'grandfather'. I wouldn't mind betting he was really her father - but that I'll never know! Lisa

Sorry peeps While you were all adding to the thread i was ordering a batch of certs, including this little chap,(though he has a death entry gor the following quarter) I just wish i could pinpoint g g/f George Chambers a bit more accurately. His two census appearances with g g/m ('91 and 01) don't help with his place and year of birth, just a county and differ by 4 years. There are too many George Chambers 1840-1845 births in Lincolnshire to try and guess at,hence i only know he died post 1901. On his marriage cert his father is down as John Chambers but in the census George is head and another George is down as father. IGI is not much help either Glen

Glen, One of my gggrandfathers used his friend's surname as a middle name for one of his sons. He also happened to be the Pastor that married them.
