I would guess that Lay is going to be a rarer name than McDonnell, so if I were you I would search the marriage index for Lay till you find one who married a McDonnell, rather than the other way round. Kate.

The same will apply to any cert - if you have no idea about him. Right, I'd look for eldest child's birth index. Look for a marriage before then, in the same area as the birth registration. nell

Hi Nell Eldest child (we think) was born in 1931 or 1932. Please forgive my supidity, but If I don't know where he was from, other than the fact he married in East London - how can I search for his death ? I have access to Ancestry, but won't there be too many entries for me to narrow down. Any advice really gratefully accepted. Thanks - Jeanne

You can find his death cert from the death index images on Ancestry, which would give his rough age and from that you could find his birth and also locate him on the census. Freebmd has hardly anything after 1910. To narrow down search for the marriage do you know when his and Maud's eldest child was born? nell

I am taking liberties today in asking for help again.....but I am trying to find my MIL's father, whom she knows very little about. He was called Henry (?) McDonnell and was married to Maud Lay (b1909 in East London) all she knows is that he died in about 1943 or 1944, and that there was some connection with 'French Polishers'. I don't know his year of birth or location. I can't find an entry on FreeBMD. Thank you - Jeanne
