Relly was a pub landlord, how can i check?

A relly of mine Charles Varney(born1864) is listed as a beer house keeper in 1901, another relative says he has heard of a relative being the landlord of the star pub in wormley herts. I called the brewery for that pub and they didnt seem to want to help at all. So has anyone got any ideas of a way to find if this was infact his pub?

Was it a Varney?? I looked at the 1914 Hertfordshire Kelly's Directory on the Historic Directories website. I was going to look for the pub, but there were too many ''Star'' entries! Just thought you might like to know that Charles Varney was still the Sexton in Wormley in 1914! As that meant I was looking at the Wormley page, I looked at the commercial trades listed......there were a few beer retailers, but none with a name for their premises :o(( Merry

Thanks for looking Merry, he was still the church dood too lol, that is such a strange pair of occupations for 1 man to have lol What is the kellys you talk of,...sounds like something I need. And yes he was Charles Varney born High rd wormley, herts. 1902 he is listed as a beer house keeper and has 7 boarders plus his family in same place, so this must be the pub he is living at. There are only 2 pubs that come under wormley high road and from another relly I know it is the star. Just wish the dang brewery would help even a little bit, thats mcmullens for ya :(

The website I was using is: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ Kelly's Directories are Trade Directories (think Yellow Pages, but without phone numbers!).....They were printed, with varying degrees of detail, all over the country.....there are lots of other Trade Directories too.....Hunts, Post Office, ummm Slaters.....anyway....loads of different ones. A tiny percentage have been digitized on the site I mentioned. Generally the books are held at central libraries and Record Offices Merry

Not an expert, but I dont think a 'beer house' would be the same as a pub. I think he probably had a lodging house and sold beer aswell. Either way he would have had to apply for a licence, so that may be your best bet.

Applications for licences to sell alcohol should be in the relevant records office. nell

Thanks for info guys, sorry I didnt reply sooner but fell asleep lol. The brewery did actually call me back. Mcmullens didnt buy the pub until 1924 and have no record of who they bought it from, so I really am stumped. Not sure if its possible to find the owner of a building I will call the local council tomorrow and ask about licensing tho thanks for that 0)
