I have a name in my tree which I have never heard of before. In the 1891 census it says--- Ennage Boxall 1885 Croydon. 1901 Census says--- Emaye Boxall 1885 Croydon. Both census states Male. I have checked the address and its the correct one. Has anyone come across this name before? Gratefull for any help. Thankyou. C xx

Not come across it before. This is the birth index entry from FreeBMD: Births Sep 1884 Boxall [HK]enage Croydon 2a 222 The [HK] means that the transcriber couldn't tell if the first letter was an H or a K, but since it comes after Gertrude and before Jemima, it should be an H, therefore Henage. I'm just going to check on the image on ancestry as the one on FreeBMD is not very clear - back soon. Kate.

I can't find a meaning for it anywhere!! It might just be a surname used as a first name (like Clark Gable etc) There are a few Henage's on Ancestry, both first and last name. Merry

Hi Merry, I just googled Henage and found it as a surname but not as a first name. All the rest of the family have 'normal' names.I have the Boxall tree going back and the name doesn't appear in any of the lines. C x

Now the image on ancestry has finally loaded, yes it is Henage (as Merry said ages and ages ago!). My guess would be that it is a family surname, perhaps mother's or grandmother's maiden name? It was seemingly quite common for people not to know whether there was an H at the beginning of their name, such as Esther / Hester, Ellen / Helen, Etherington / Hetherington, but more confusing in this case as it means you don't know whether the surname you are looking for will be listed as Ennage or Hen(n)age. Thankyou Kate. The strange thing is I can't ever remember my father mentioning the name. My father was the son of the youngest member of the family Daisy. I never new her as she died long before my time. I have the tree,as I said going back on both the mother and fathers sides to early 1800 and haven't come across it but maybe earlier than that?
