The controversy over who wrote the tune to Auld Lang Syne has resurfaces again, it is of course William Shield (1748-1829) a Boat Builder and later, an Opera composer (for the Drury Lane theatre) from Swalwell-on-Tyne England. The tune, as written by Shield, is reproduced here, so you can see (and hear) yourself |

Can you all remember that famous song which I guess we all sing at some point over each new year. I am asking for help to find information about the man who wrote the music for it. We all know Robert Burns wrote the words, but it has been disputed for years who wrote the music. The Scots people (excuse me if your Scottish) swear Robert Burns wrote the words and music, the Geordies knew the music was written by William Shield, who has been named as a famous Scots person for all he is English. (Look up Famnous Scots men) anyway Evidence has just been discovered that William Shield did in fact write the music for Auld Lang Syne, I did not mean this to be this long, he is a relative of my husbands, fame at last, he was born 5th March 1748 in Swalwell, County Durham, I have him as having two wifes Ann Stokes and a Catherine, can anybody elaborate on his family for me. Thank you Jennifer. |
