I'm trying to find if some births I have are relatives - they look good but no proof yet. They are all between 1901 and 1909 in the district of West Ham. I cannot afford all the certs, and would otherwise have to wait until the 1911 is out. I'd like to try the parish records, but have no idea how many sets of microfiche this would mean. Does anyone know please? |

West Ham - a very densely populated area of East London, I'm afraid. Your bank account will be 'Hammered'. |

In this sort of situation I try looking for memorial inscriptions on grave stones. I don't know what the situation is in London but in my neck of the woods, these have been transcribed by the local history society who will send you a list of more unusual surnames for a small fee. This should give you more indication where to look. |

Hi Heidi, If you go to the East of London FHS website (www.eolfhs.org.uk), under parishes - West Ham, it lists the possible churches. You could then look under SEAX (Essex Record Office catalogue) to see what they have. With luck, someone on the GR Records Office Board might be able to help if they plan to visit Chelmsford. I'm afraid you may have to save up for some certificates, tho. Good hunting, Carol |

You might find it worth keeping an eye on this site: http://www.parishregister.*com (remove *) Their databases transcribed so far are mainly the pre-registration ones, but you might find something useful. Christine |

I guess you have the district West Ham from the GRO birth index. Trouble is that district covers the following sub districts, all of which probably had several churches so even if the children were baptised, which was less common at that time than it had been in the previous century, there would be an awful lot of searching to do: Canning Town; Forest Gate; Leyton; North East Ham; North Leyton; Plaistow; Silvertown; South East Ham; South Leyton; Stratford; Walthamstow; Walthamstow East; Walthamstow West; Wanstead; West Ham; West Ham Central; West Ham North East; West Ham North West; West Ham South; Woodford. Update: OOPS - you must have added your 'Closed' message while I was typing the above. |
