if the man my great great grandmother was living with was the father of her son?hes not named on his birth certificate and at first i was a bit stumped until i saw the list of names int he residence she was living beore robert was born. the man of the house was called robert carter. she was the lodger. her sons name was robert edward carter davis. would i be right in assuming that the head of the house is therefore my great grandfathers father?

It was quite common to give the child a middle name as the surname of the supposed father. I guess only the mother knew for sure if there was anyone else!! LOL Anne

I noticed from your other post that Eliz Davies was married and had an 11 year old son with her in 1891 so looked in 1881 census. She is listed there in Southampton as Elizabeth A Davis wife 25 born Upway Dorset with husband Daniel Davis 24 born Lyndhurst Hampshire and sons William C Davis aged 2 and John G Davis aged 1 both born Upway. It would be worth searching for Daniel in later censuses, and/or for a death for him. If they were still married I suppose it is posssible that he just happened to be away on census night and that he was the father but naming the lad after the landlord does seem a bit suspicious. Is there no father named on your great grandfather's birth certificate? As they were married Daniel would be named if he were the father. If no name given I would see Mr Carter as a definite possiblility.

no the fathers name n the birth certifictae is blank yet on his marriage certificate to annie monckton (my great grandmother) his father is named as robert edward carter davis (deceased) and her was apparently a labourer. i originally thought that robert edward carter davis was just a cop out because they didnt know who is fatehr was but having seen mr carter in the same residence as elizabeth i because suspicious

Hmm - does look like Robert Carter was he daddy, but wonder if he took any part in the boy's life as he retained the Davies surname. Just spotted yet another of your posts where you ask how to trace Elizabeth Ann. This looks like her marriage to Daniel. So now you have place of birth, age and probable maiden name. 1878 Apr-May-Jun Southampton 2c 68 Margaret Brown >Elizabeth Ann Cox >Daniel Davis 1878 George Seabright

Sorry, you have so many threads about this family, I hope I'm not duplicating anyone, but..... isn't this her? 1861 census: Elizabeth Cox abt 1836 Monkton, Dorset, England Head Upwey Dorset >>>>Elizabeth A Cox abt 1856 Upwey, Dorset, England Daughter Upwey Dorset John Cox abt 1858 Upwey, Dorset, England Son Upwey Dorset William C Cox abt 1860 Upwey, Dorset, England Son Upwey Dorset and then she gets married: Name: Daniel Davis Year of Registration: 1878 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Southampton County: Hampshire Volume: 2c Page: 68 Spouse Elizabeth Ann Cox then she has the first son and appears on the 1881 census..... then she appears on the 1891 census, at the time pregnant with Mr Carter's baby.......
