Have you checked IGI to see if the details are on there because that is free. You have the year to check if you have the reference number. Irene

Depending on the year of the marriage, you could go to the county record office for the area the marriage took place, and if you know which parish the marriage took place you could find a copy of the marriage register there which would give you details of the marriage. Only way to see everything on the marriage certificate is to buy it using the reference numbers you have found. Kath. x

As already stated, the reference you have found will enable you to order the certificate online direct from the General Register Office. It will cost you £7. Go to: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp Make sure you check the box 'Is the General Register Office Index known?' as 'Yes' as it will cost you £11.50 without the reference. Btw, even if you were to visit a local Register Office in person, I believe the only way to view the certificate is to purchase it. Liz

if the reference you have is from the GRO index then it is no good at the local registry office, you need to go throught the GRO site and order it online http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ Roy

You need to use this info to order the certificate from GRO. You can do this online. Don't go to a register office, these reference numbers are useless to them. Andrew.

I have found a refernce volume and pg number for an ancestor marriage record, but what does that actually tell me - can anyone help? Do I now need to order a copy of the certificate to go any further or can I turn up with my notes in hand at an office and see a copy of the entry to get parents details etc? Sorry it's a bit of a basic one I guess!
