I have been looking for my husbands family on and off for the past 2 years with no luck. I wonder if someone could give me some tips on how to search or where to search. My Husbands father was called Harry Fryer born 16/09/1925. My problem is that nobody is sure where he was born. He spoke with a South African accent but there is talk of him being born in this country and taken over to S/Africa at a young age He married on the 16/10/1954 in Fleetwood Lancs. His fathers name was George Henry Fryer and again not sure whether he was born here or in S/Africa. Harry died in an accident on a trawler 05/12/1967 again in Fleetwood Lancs. Have I come to a dead end or can someone give me any tips where to go from here because I have run out of ideas

If you are certain of the date of birth then it is likely that one of the following is Harry's birth reference. There is no Harry/Henry registered in the Sept. qtr. of 1925 unless Harry was a middle name. These two are registered in the Dec. qtr. Henry A. Fryer, mother's maiden name Pearce Dec, qtr. 1925, Southampton, 2c, 91 or Henry W. Fryer, mother's maiden name Fryer Dec. qtr. 1925, Dartford, 2a, 988 Since you have a father's name, I would be inclined to go for the first one, as the second one is likely to be illegitimate with the mother's maiden name being Fryer. You could order the first certificate and give the father's name as a checking point so they don't send the certificate if the father's name is something different. Kath. x

Hi all, His name was Harry not Henry, and Harrys father was called George Henry, so I don't think that any of those names can be right. Thanks anyway for trying. Cheryl

I have never looked at it like that, but would they use Harry on his marriage and death cert if his name was Henry. Cheryl

It depends on whether he had always been called Harry. Certainly you would expect him to be giving the information himself for the marriage certificate, but on the death certificate, it depends who was giving the information - they might have only ever known him as Harry. Kath. x

Have you trawled the indexes to find out what siblings there are? I presume that you don't know who is mother is and this may be the best way to find out.

I have searched most indexes, I'm sure something will eventually turn up. Not having much joy at the moment though. Thanks for your input. Cheryl
