Good morning! I'm contemlpating joining my local family history society, Liverpool, on their website they have a list of surnames people are looking at. I'm just wondering about the etiquette for contacting them: will they think I'm awful if I'm not a member?! Its a surname list with e emails written in such a way so that spammers can't get at them. You'll probably think I'm crackers but this family history stuff can be quite nerve wracking!

Hi Sarah I am a member of Liverpool, and they do ask members for permission to display contact details. If you don't want them displayed you indicate that when you fill in your 'name interests' form. So I have always been under the impression that members should be aware that they may get contact from non members. I wouldn't worry, if it were me I would send a polite email expalining where you saw the information and that you hope they don't mind contact. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. By the way, it's worth joining, they do a really good quarterly mag, and give advice and meetings etc. The forum is especially good, always get prompt and worthwhile replies when asking for help. Simone :)
