Hello, I am trying to find some records of a George Brown who was killed in WW1. His name appears on the war memorial at Micheldever Hampshire. There is no record for a Brown on the CWG commission site(which seems very strange). There are so many George Brown,s on The National Archives site that I do not know which one to pick. It will cost me a fortune to view all the records. Does anyone have a tip for helping me find this soldiers records. Thank you. Lorraine.

Hi Lorriane Have you tried searching the CWG site using just the intital of his first name? I've found that works better than putting in the whole first name. If you've an idea of his age and when he died and which service he was in add the here, I expect someone will have look for you. Heather

There must be some George Brown's, I have just searched but there are too many results as you can only enter initials, not the whole first name, perhaps that's what's happening to you Try again with BROWN G but specify a year i.e. 1914 I've got 24 results and many George's

Can you tell me where he was born and I´ll check it out on 1837 for you. (You can specify the place of birth when checking WW1 deaths)

try www(.)1914-1918(.)net - they have a forum on there, just explain that you know where the memorial is but his name isn't on CWGC - they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable and have CDs of all the soliders who died, they are only too willing to help! Good luck Linda

Is there any record of a regiment on the War Memorial - or there may well be some mention of the regiment in the Parish Records. These may be available through the County Record Office Keith

Thank you everyone for your help. I was finally able to get the Brown's through CWG, but there are still too many to check. There is no mention of his regiment on the war memorial or in the parish records. however I will take all advice given with gratitude and check out the other sites you have mentioned. I am not sure where he was born as yet but I think it was Hampshire around 1880, somehwere near Winchester. There are4 George Browns on 1837 who were connected to Hampshire BROWN, George Ropley, Hants Little London, Hants BROWN, George Alton, Hants Shaldon, Hants BROWN, George Melbury Abbas, Dorset Eastleigh, Hants BROWN, George Sampson Haywards Heath, Sussex Farnbury, Hants The information you are given (above) is name, then place of birth, then place of residence. If you know which is DEFINITELY yours then I will look it up for you - but each look up costs 5 units so hope you understand that I am not prepared to look up all 4 !!

how do you know he died, if its because his name is on the war memorial, a few memorials like the one at Allenton in Derby, names all who served, not just the ones that died, it is unusal but could yours have survived

Bit of a long shot but the memorial must have been erected by the Parish Council or similar. They might still hold the list of names that was used, the source of that information and also the criteria for inclusion? Apart from that there seems to be two war graves in the churchyard. Might be worth checking them out? Denis.
