On a marriage certificate when the father's name & occupation is listed, does this mean that the father is still alive at this time or does it also say deceased if not? Interested in your thoughts. Kerri

I would presume that it doesn't mean the father is still alive at this time if it says deceased as the marriage cert as this is an exact copy of the original. Lyn x

If it says deceased for the father, then it's fairly safe to assume that he was (though I'm sure that there are exceptions to this rule!). If it doesn't say deceased then this is supposed to imply that he was still alive, but as Suzanne says above, quite often they neglected to put this down so you can't assume it. I have one rellie who correctly put that her father was deceased on her first marriage, but omitted this fact when she remarried 10 years later! Richard

I have several marriage certificates where it doesn't say that the father is already dead. If the question's not asked the information's not offered. So never assume that the father is alive.

I do have an exception to the rule Richard. Father is down as deceased when in fact he had left his wife when she had had another baby who couldn't possibly be his, He was in the CEF ing WW1 and when he cam home after 18 months she had another daughter. He went back to Canada leaving his wife with 4 small children and he divorced her. He died in 1965. On my grans wedding cert father is 'deceased'. Nicky

One of my lot remarried in her 60's but their is no indication that her dad was deceased however on the first marriage they put his name and deceased in brackets then his ocupaition. Given her father died in 1919/20 he was long gone by the time of the 1949 second marriage. If the cert says deceased then he probally is but if it doesn't it could be either or.

also be aware that the fathers name may not be right, my grand father and his 6 siblings had a different name on each of there marriage certs, my grand father had his step fathers first name and his real fathers surname, sent me looking for the wrong line for a while
