I have received a birth certificate today that has left me a bit puzzled. My ancestor is called Richard Bradshaw and on his marriage cert, in the space for fathers name it states 'illegitimate'. On the 1861 census, he is recorded as Richard Bradshaw with gregory written after his surname. On the birth cert I have received today, there is no father named but the child is Richard Gregory. Mother matches and his grandmother registered the birth and she also matches so it is definately the right one. Could Gregory be the surname of the father do you think, or is it his middle name? It is his middle name, but I bet it is also the surname of his father. It was quite commonplace for the father's name to appear somwhere in the child's name.....Hubby's great-granny had an illegitimate baby with a Gregory as well!! Maybe it's the same man!!!? Merry

Have a scout round the area where your chap is in 1861, you might just find a Mr Gregory living close by! worth a try..
