Hi i was wondering if anyone could help me, i have a marriage certificate for a Jane taylor/goulding edwards 1907 prescot, the age on her cerificate says 23 meaning she was born in 1884 but i cant find any records of a jane taylor born in 1884, i found 1883 and 1 in 1887 i have both birth certificates the 1887 has the same address on as the marriage and census images i have. Could the age on the marriage one be wrong, also on the marriage one it says father john taylor but on the birth it says james taylor(deceased), i cant find a record on the census of a father in the home only a mother as head(same mothers name on birth certificate) So sorry for all this but im so stuck and have been for over 2 months, HELP Emma |

age on marriage could well be wrong cos if she said she was over twenty one then she didnt need parental consent to marry. As you have a birth cert with the same address on as the marriage cert then i would say that's a clincher! Again as the birth cert says the father was deceased then I wouldn't be too concerned as to the difference on the marriage after all she didnt know her dad and the info on certs is only as good as the informants knowledge. her dad may have always been to referred to as John |

thanks shirley i think it is the right one, i think her father died when her mother was pregnant with her in that case, what i dont understand is why on the birth certificate it says James Taylor but on the marriage is john could they have called him john not james??? emma |

If you have the family on the census with the mother as head,is she down as a widow? The address being common on the marriage cert and birth cert is the srongest clue, the age she gave at the time may well be innacurate, they often are. Glen |

If he had been dead for the whole of the bride's life, it's not really surprising she got her father's name wrong when asked at the wedding. You know her mum's full name, so you need to look for Mum's marriage to James Taylor. If you can't find it, you could then consider John Taylor. Merry |

Also you would expect to see the death fo Mr Taylor within nine months of the birth of his daughter. Having said that, I have a cert where the father of the baby is the mum's husband, BUT....he had been dead 17 years when his daughter was born!!!!! So, lies do get told! Merry |

Sometimes a middle name might be used instead of the first name (i have a couple of chaps who used first name on census for one year and middle name for the next census, then revert back to first name again next time around.) I also have them use the middle name for the census but the 'proper' name for marriage and death certs.I suppose it depends if the name was used through the family and other brothers/cousins/nephews lived close by,it would avoid confusion for them and create it for us many years later. Looks like she kept up the pretence thing on her age cos she said she was 23 in1907. 1951 minus1907 = 44 + 23 she said she was in 1907 = 67. so the informant thought she was still sixty six , not yet reached her 67rth birthday when she died . Does that make sense?? |
