Sylvia, they must have as i found this, In the rest of the 19th Century the Royal Marines served in many landings especially in the First and Second Opium Wars (1839-1842 and 1856-1860) against the Chinese. These were all successful except for the landing at the Mouth of the Peiho in 1859, where Admiral Sir James Hope ordered a landing across extensive mud flats even though his brigadier, Colonel Thomas Lemon RMLI, advised against it. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Marines Roy

Hi Georgina, I tried that. Even on page one, it gives commanding officers ranks etc. but no mention of regt. Sylv.

Sylvia if you look at the 1841 census & keep going back through the pages you may get some clues as to which regiment it is. Georgina.

Hello all, I have a rellie in 1841 as a soldier at Chatham Barracks, Gillingham, Kent. All men are listed as soldiers. How can I find out what regiment or battalion was stationd here at this time. Many thanks, Sylvia.
