Cant find thread now. Spoke to James Legon, the authority on watermen/lightermen - said he had never heard of this one before and can only think that it was someone who was taking passengers along/across the Thames for the council. Said it wouldnt have been a dustman as lightermen did that work. |

Name was Thomas H (henry) Bird Born 1853, Lived at 8 Jerusalem Passage, Hackney and 57 Chalgrove Road Hackney he is showing at 57 Chalgrove road, Hackney being a vestry waterman on the 1901 census Thanks for the help on this Heather |

Hi guys, well I have done what I should have done originally and looked at this guy on the 1901. Do you notice that over his name the enumerator has scribbled Road Lab(ourer)? I think peeps we will find this man was not employed on the Thames in a boat, but in a cart, spraying water/disinfectant on the roads! Hence the vestry - council/cleansing!!! The other clue being, not one man around him is a waterman or lighterman and they all used to live in very tight little communities - they were really quite incestuous and all mine have intermarried and often given a middle name of another lighterman/waterman family. In Bermondsey about that time I was amazed to see they did this cleansing about 3 times a week. Well, thats my thoughts, but will still wait to hear from Company of Watermen for their verdict! I suppose there is still an outside chance he was a waterman employed by the council. |

thats great Heather, I never noticed what was written above, I thought that was for another person! This is getting really interesting, everything else i have in my tree is an ag lab or gen lab, nice to see something different Thanks again!! |
