What records do Local Registry Offices hold?

Hi Margaret You're not the only person who gets confused. Parish records for both St Mary Lambeth (now LONDON borough of Lambeth) and St Pancras are held at the LMA. Other local records are held at Lambeth Archives in the Minet Library. I don't pretend to understand what is held where and why. Last week I travelled from Southwark Archives to LMA, hoping to look at some poor law records, only to discover that it would have been held at Southwark! If you wanted to pm me with details, I shall be going back to the LMA in June.

Nell, Looks like I have my work cut out for me. What I need is a big interactive map so when I click on a place, it comes up with a list of where to look for each record!!

St Pancras is LMA, but you might find what you want at Camden Local Studies Centre, which is housed in Holborn Library. Lambeth should be Lambeth archives and I am not sure whether they would also be at the LMA or the Surrey History Centre in Woking. nell

Valerie, I've already checked LDS with no luck. Had someone check Pallots earlier for the marriage. Nell, Would both these areas come under LMA? (I'm geographically challenged!!) If not, I'll check out the county record offices. Thanks.

Local register offices just hold details of civil registrations from 1st July 1837. You can order certs from them, but you can't do searches there. County records offices are what you want - they hold a wealth of information, including parish registers for baptisms, marriages and burials, old maps, censuses for the area, poor law records, workhouse registers, gaol registers, electoral rolls, schools records etc etc. But they do vary in size etc and have different opening hours. Most will have websites so if you google you can find out more. I think the registers you want would be at the London Metropolitan Archives. nell

I would be looking for records just before the start of registration in 1837. A christening and possible marriage at St. Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey and/or possible marriage at St. Pancras
