I am at a dead end with one of my traces and have only gone back as far as 1881. The problem I have is the family I am tracing although they appear on the 1881 census the head of the house is listed as the mother. The father was therefore dead or away. As I don't know the fathers name or the mothers maiden name I don't know how to go any further back. Has anyone got any tips for me! Thanks Michelle I am pretty new to this and had never thought of the birth certificate. Thanks! the only thing is will I have to buy a copy of the original or is there a site I can get the info from straight away for free?

The best way would be to find one of the childrens birth entry in the index, then send for the cert, this should tell you the mothers maiden name, fathers name and occupation. Roy

1) If the mother is down as widow then husband has died. 2) Any children born before the 1871 census? look for them. 3) Check the IGI for births of children to get fathers name etc Suzanne
