If you know where they are born you will need to search the PR's. if they are not available online, you will have to try the LDS or CRO and view the films. Merry |

McDowell does not sound like a Devon name! As he married in Stoke Damerel, was John in the navy? This might be him from National Archives catalogue: ADM 29/35/978 Original page number: 978 John MCDUELL; Rating; Born: [Not Given]; Age on entry: 16; Dates served: 21 June 1826-1 April 1845; Date and Type of Application: Admiralty 19 May 1845 John MCDOWELL; Rating; Born: [Not Given]; Age on entry: 16; Dates served: 21 June 1826-1 April 1845; Date and Type of Application: Admiralty 19 May 1845 If his wife came from Devon, have a look at Devon FHS's website as they have transcribed a lot of parish registers. |

Do you reckon this may be Charlottes lot in 1841 (perhaps Manuel from Fawlty Towers transcribed): NB Bit of an age gap between them, isnt there? Is she a second wife? Or do you mean they married 1835? Charles Pigeon abt 1833 Devon, England Kenton Devon >>>>>Charlotte Pigeon abt 1831 Devon, England Kenton Devon Emma Pigeon abt 1840 Devon, England Kenton Devon John Pigeon abt 1827 Devon, England Kenton Devon Joseph Pigeon abt 1801 Devon, England Kenton Devon Mary Pigeon abt 1806 Devon, England Kenton Devon Mary Pigeon abt 1829 Devon, England Kenton Devon Robert Pigeon abt 1837 Devon, England Kenton Devon |

This link http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/surnameframe.htm is definitely worth looking at. I searched on Mcd and had rather more hits on the 1861 census than Ancestry showed. |

Phoenix, Sorry to hijack this thread, but can you tall me more about information on mariners from the National Archive please. I too have a missing-from-the-1841-census-mariner from Devon and maybe these records will help. I've had a look at the web site, but other than the Battle of Trafalgar I'm not sure where to look!! Hi Lizzie Sorry, I was out last night and have only just noticed your message. If your ancestor was a naval rating, discharged to pension, then you may find details of him on the Catalogue Choose search the archives from the menu, and Catalogue Put his name in the 'word or phrase' search box and ADM 29 in the 'department or series code' search box If anything suitable comes up, it's then a visit to Kew, but the adm 29 reference on Microfilm will list all the ships he was on board, with dates, so you can find out quite a bit about him. There is also quite a bit on the merchant navy in the 1830s and 1840s, but there is no online catalogue for that. |
