I am looking for my great grandfather, William Ketley. I thought I had him, but am not so sure now. An old family member (since died) wrote his birth date and place and parent’s names. William Ketley born 1852 Good Easter,Essex son of James and Eliza. That all fits with BMDs. But he is missing on 1861 and 1871 census, anywhere. The rest of the family are all there. There is a death for a William Ketley in 1853. He came to Australia in 1874. Age on shipping record 20 years. Grandma said he was 16 when he came. I’ve found another William Ketley born 1857 Mashbury, Essex. Parents James and Eliza as well. This one is on 1861 and 1871 census then goes. And he would have been 17 when he came here. His shipping record gives age 20, born Essex, parents James and Eliza Ketley. Marriage in Australia in 1879 gives age 25 born Essex, parents James and Eliza. I can’t find another William Ketley with James and Eliza for parents in Essex. I’m beginning to think he is actually the 1857 one who put his age up to come here by himself. Any ideas?? |

maybe they had two, the first dying, and the the second being given the same name - it sounds macabre, but happened all the time |

Sorry Jess I didn't make myself clear. This is two completely different families. Just had two James and Elizas marrying. One James and Eliza born 1818. Other James and Eliza born 1824 and 1830. I know about the name reuse. I have one lot who reused Isobell three times. Mind you, I have another lot who just had three Isobells and all lived. See what I have to put up with in my family. |
