Is it possible to tell which regiment someone was in just by their uniform? I have a photo of my grandmothers brother in uniform. only the top half but i am curious as to which regiment he was in. I also have a photo of an unknown sailor. Top half again. Is there something i can pick up on a uniform that can give me more info? Vanessa

Yes you can Vanessa. I am not good enough to tell you how, but there must be a Google page. I do know , for instance that the Guards show their difference in the buttons, and their possitions on the tunics. The Scotish regiments, would have buttons, with the insignia on them..... but don't listen to me, look up Google, you'll find it. Good luck Deanna X

Hi Vanessa Are you able to scan the photos into the computer? You would then be able to blow them up to pick up greater detail. You could try this site which buys and sells army badges etc but they do have pictures on which would help you identify what you can see: http://www.kellybadge*co*uk/ But googling will bring up so many sites that can aid you to identify what you're looking for. Hi Snow drop. Yes i have scaned, enlarged and got the glasses out. The only thing that stands out on the unknown sailor is a small star on his right arm sleeve. There may be more to read in the strips on his lapel. My great uncle seems to have plan buttons a large badge on each collar and a wide white thick belt with badge(buckle) it looks like a lions head. I will keep looking. this is very intresting now i an getting my teeth into it. Vanessa

WHOOPPIEE!!!! Thanks Snow drop. Great uncle was in the York + lancaster Regiment. Found photo of collar badges matching his. No matches for his belt buckle though. Will continue searching that site. Now to find out who the unknown sailor is. My brother thinks it may be my grand dad on my fathers side. Vanessa

Snow drop. No. My hubby is being made redundant on the 26th so when he gets his monies etc on the 7th june i will have letter, cheque etc ready to send. I have been struggling with this photo of great uncle william mckegg. Have just phoned hubby and told him. He tells me there is a museum in our town centre that will put me on the right tracks for grt uncle william. Now for the next one. I don`t seem to see many requests for naval info around? maybe because the biggest amount of men used where in the army. Vanessa

It`s no good!! I will have to ask someone out there on the tips board if there is anyone who knows their naval history. I am struggling with the unknown sailor. I am sure he is very early 1900s but not been up on naval history i am drawing a blank. I have searched that site you gave me Snow drop but i am still at a loss. I am going to have a caffine break and sort the brain out. Vanessa
