I think its jour n. Probably an abbreviation for journeyman - that is someone who has served an apprenticeship, but is not yet a master. From the French 'jour' for day, as these men were paid on a daily basis. nell |

Looking at James Hanks b.1811 on the 1851 census.... His occupation is Carver and Gilder, but can anyone read the word written after this? Source information: HO107/1514, Registration district: Holborn, Sub-registration district: St Andrew Eastern, Folio: 207 Page: 15 |
